How the Right Curtain Length Can Make Your Room Look Bigger and More Luxurious

The right curtain length can make your room feel taller, brighter and more luxurious. Discover expert styling tips to create the illusion of more space and elevate your home's interior with beautifully made-to-measure curtains.

How the Right Curtain Length Can Make Your Room Look Bigger and More Luxurious

When choosing new curtains, most people focus on the fabric, colour or pattern. But one simple detail can have a bigger impact on the overall look of your room than you might think, the length of your curtains.

Curtains that fall short of the floor can make a space feel smaller and unfinished. On the other hand, floor-length curtains create a sense of elegance, helping a room feel more balanced, sophisticated and inviting.

Interior designers often use full-length, made-to-measure curtains to draw the eye upwards, creating the illusion of higher ceilings and larger windows. It’s a simple design trick that can make almost any room feel more spacious and luxurious.

The way we work is that our fitter will install the curtain poles and then take exact final measurements. Typically, when we make curtains to hang straight we make a deduction to allow for the fabric to drop to make sure the curtains sit just off the floor.  This gives a more contemporary tailored look.
However, some clients, especially those with period properties prefer a puddled look.  This is where the curtains are specifically made longer to fall on the floor, or kick out.  It’s a slightly higher maintenance look as every time you open and close the curtains you have to re-arrange and dress them, but it looks great for a more romantic and chubby chic look.

Whether you’re updating a living room, bedroom, dining room or a new extension with bi-fold doors, the right curtain length helps create a polished, professionally styled finish. When combined with carefully chosen fabrics and expert fitting, curtains become more than just a practical window covering, they become a key feature of the room.

When discussing the best length for curtains you should consider the positioning of the furniture and the heat source for the room such as radiators.  For example, for a small Sitting Room, if the sofa is going to sit in front of the window and has a radiator underneath then its not practical to have full length curtains, as they will be difficult to pull, and will also block the heat coming into the room.  In this instance, mid-length, or just above the radiator might be the best solution.
